Finding Human - Envisioning Value-Driven Post COVID Futures
The global community is experiencing disruptions and limitations due to the COVID19 pandemic. The lockdown, social distancing and other public health measures have forced us to make modifications in our normal way of living. Probably the largest change we’re experiencing in the ‘New Normal’, in different degrees around the world, is how the public have entered the private spaces, and how physical and social experiences have entered the digital space. Our homes have become places of education, leisure, work, and wellness as we seek safe and socially distanced space.
In response to limitations placed on social and physical activities, people have been devising creative ways to keep socially connected. These transitioned experiences began as a temporary replacement for what we’ve lost socially; however they have also brought a new appreciation of human experiences and values which we took for granted. Taking a spontaneous trip to freely explore new cultures, enjoying a sense of anonymity while people-watching amidst a crowd of people, attending events to expand social circles, and seeking serendipitous encounters while visiting favorite places of interest - these are just a few of the missed human experiences.
From spontaneity, serendipity, exploration, and to openness, what other experiential values can we observe from our collective situation? Can we recapture this experience in envisioning and shaping our digitally connected virtual experiences? At the same time, how can we ensure that the adoption of emerging technologies such as autonomous navigation, AI and XR is driven by human values? Moreover, what will our hybrid city of the future look like?
What experiential values can we observe from our collective pandemic situation, and how might we leverage these values to envision our post-COVID futures?
